In the news: Telecom Reseller

Ray Horak, Technology Editor at Telecom Reseller recently interviewed Tim Joint, Commercial Manager for ApplianX...

Aculab has roots in computer telephony beginning with the manufacture of media processing boards and development of CTI software in 1990. Their range of products currently includes high-density media processing cards and host media processing software, IP boards and software, TDM voice boards, SS7 and signaling blades including SIP and H.323, and a performance-tuned VoiceXML/CCXML interpreter. They recently caught my attention with the ApplianX IP Gateway, which is the first of a much broader planned portfolio, and Tim Joint, the product manager, briefed me on it.

He noted, “The gateway is a purpose-built appliance designed to soften and simplify migration from TDM to VoIP by extending the functional life of the legacy PBX.” Positioned between a legacy TDM switch and SIP trunk it serves as a TDM-to-IP protocol converter that extends the functional life of the TDM switch while allowing the firm to take advantage of SIP-based features such as call back when available, call transfer, call diversion (call forwarding), message waiting indicator and route optimization. (Note: A gateway is a node that interconnects two or more disparate networks, serving as a protocol converter and, as necessary, physical media converter.)

Targeted at the SMB, ApplianX is a 1U 19” rack-mounted appliance available in configurations supporting 1, 2 or 4 universal T1/E1 interfaces and up to 24/30 SIP channels per interface across a dual redundant Ethernet interface for LAN/WAN access, with automatic load balancing. TDM failover ensures connectivity should a SIP trunk fail. It supports RTP voice (G.711 or G.729AB) and pass-through (T.30 over G.711) fax.

Available in North America through a single tier distribution network, ApplianX is certified for use with Aastra, Avaya, BT and Cisco systems.
